Review

Althea Cunningham has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Grant MacEwan University and has established a career in the world of entertainment since graduation. Life experience conjures up vivid memories, love and humanity are her inspiration to create.

With the release of
"On the Verge" Althea distinguishes herself as a writer with a unique ability to create material that is modern and sophisticated, yet accessible. Her vocal and songwriting abilities demonstrate a maturity of her approach and validates her reputation as a key innovator of Neo- soul/pop music is the 21 st century.

A Canadian of Jamaican descent, Althea combines the influences of her cultural heritage, her passion for jazz music, and her dedication to create a fresh and contemporary vocal sound drawing from jazz, roots and blues tradition. This keeps her a highly in - demand songwriter, educator and sideperson for projects of various styles and has also allowed her to nurture her career as a bandleader.

As well as an excellent tunesmith, Cunningham is multi- instrumentalist, playing her dynamic Voice (primary) on Sennheiser Microphones, Yamaha keyboard and a variety of Dixon percussion instruments. This emerging artist receives Nationwide Airplay and continues to be on numerous charts across Canada and the United States of America. She has toured extensively throughout Western Canada and also tours in the Eastern part of the country. Positive media reviews and interviews include CBC Radio, Coop Radio, CJSR Radio, Edmonton Journal and Vue Weekly.

By night she hangs upside down in trees and when the blood rushes to her head she crafts poignant songs about relationships and social issues. Often you'll find her playing the rhythmn on most things in sight including her mother's behind she brings that same energy to the stage. Her animated presence is sure to leave an imprint on your soul.
